The horrific rape of a paramedic who was treating a toddler for burn wounds has outraged residents of Durban Deep, west of Johannesburg. A neighbour of the two-year-old boy's family told The Times that the boy was left alone in a street near the crime-wracked informal settlement while three armed men accosted the two female paramedics attending to him, dragged them to nearby bushes, raped one and attempted to rape the other. The paramedics had been called to the area on Friday night after the boy's mother reported that he had been burnt with hot water. the attackers had fled...
Nelson Mandela's former wife Winnie has turned on her ex-husband and accused him of 'betraying' the blacks of South Africa in a scathing attack. Mrs Mandela, 73, said that the former ANC Leader had done nothing for poor black people and should not have accepted the Nobel Peace Prize with the man who jailed him, FW De Klerk. In further criticisms she said her ex-husband had become a 'corporate foundation' who is 'wheeled out' by the ANC globally to collect money.
The United States and Britain are threatening to withhold support for a $3.75 billion World Bank loan for a coal-fired plant in South Africa, expanding the battleground in the global debate over who should pay for clean energy. The opposition by the bank's two largest members has raised eyebrows among those who note that the two advanced economies are allowing development of coal-powered plants in their own countries even as they raise concerns about those in poorer countries. While the loan is still likely to be approved on April 6 by the World Bank board, it has revealed the deep...
RHINOS, among the worlds most endangered and iconic animals, are being farmed on Chinese wildlife reserves in order to harvest their horns, a report by international conservation monitors has suggested. The monitors have found that China has imported 141 live white rhino from South Africa since 2000, far more than is needed for tourism purposes. They have also gathered evidence that the aim of the purchases is to set up rhino farms. The suspicion is that these rhinos are being aggregated into herds and farmed for their horns, which are valued for medicinal purposes, said Tom Milliken of Traffic, the...
Some 90% of farms redistributed to South Africa's black population from white farmers are not productive, the government has said. Land reform minister Gugile Nkwinti warned the land might be repossessed if the farms continued to fail. Almost 60,000 sq km (23,000 sq miles) have been redistributed under policies aimed at benefiting black people who were left impoverished by apartheid. The land was bought from white farmers who sold up voluntarily. The BBC's Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says some black farmers are likely to argue that they have been struggling to get the resources and skills to develop their land....
I primarily write about self defense cases in the United States. This is because I'm an American, who focuses first and foremost on American gun and self defense rights. However, as the case below from South Africa shows, armed self defense saves crime victims all around the world: Police say that a pair of armed robbers broke in to a home printing business in Pretoria. There were three or four people in the house at the time, and the robbers were armed with real and/or realistic looking guns as they set about stealing computer equipment, according to police. One of...
AP) A 507-carat diamond as big as a chicken's egg sold for $35.3 million, breaking the record for the highest price ever paid for a rough diamond, the supplier said Friday. The stone- which weighs just over 3.53 ounces - was estimated to be among the world's top 20 high-quality rough diamonds. It was discovered in September at South Africa's Cullinan mine. London-listed diamond supplier Petra Diamonds Ltd. said the gem was purchased by Hong Kong-based private jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook Jewelry Co. Ltd.
China said Thursday it was investigating whether a shipment of North Korean arms destined for Congo in violation of UN sanctions transited Chinese territory. UN diplomats said Tuesday that South Africa had notified the UN Security Council panel monitoring sanctions imposed on North Korea that the weapons had been seized in November. "China is looking into this issue... the Chinese side will also take part in relevant discussions," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, in response to a report that the shipment went through the port of Dalian in northeast China. The spokesman refused further comment. China is North Korea's...
