Hawaii considers ban on requests for Obama's birth certificate

Hawaii may start ignoring repeated requests for proof that President Barack Obama was born on the islands. Repeated requests to see President Barack Obama's birth certificate may fall on deaf ears after the House Judiciary Committee heard a bill permitting government officials to ignore people who won't give up. So-called "birthers" claim Mr Obama is ineligible to be president because, they argue, he was actually born outside the United States, and therefore doesn't meet a constitutional requirement for being president. "Sometimes we may be dealing with a cohort of people who believe lack of evidence is evidence of a conspiracy,"...

As the state continues to receive e-mails seeking Obama's birth certificate, the state House Judiciary Committee heard a bill Tuesday permitting government officials to ignore people who won't give up. "Sometimes we may be dealing with a cohort of people who believe lack of evidence is evidence of a conspiracy," said Lorrin Kim, chief of the Hawaii Department of Health's Office of Planning, Policy and Program Development. If the measure passed, the state Office of Information Practices could declare an individual a "vexatious requester" and restrict rights to government records for two years. The committee will schedule a vote on...

Authorities have captured a second "JihadJane" -- a Colorado woman who allegedly got mixed up in an international plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist after converting to Islam and marrying a Muslim man in New York, according to a report. Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, 31, was being questioned in Ireland along with six other people in the scheme to off Lars Vilks, who outraged many by depicting the prophet Mohammed as a dog in his drawings, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday. "I'm angry with her right now," said Paulin-Ramirez's mom, Christine Holcomb-Mott. "I'd like to just choke her. But I'm worried...

Will Millennials become the chump generation?

The "generation gap" endures as a staple of American political and social analysis. The notion that the special circumstances and experiences of each succeeding cohort imbue it with different perceptions, beliefs and values seems intuitively reasonable and appealing. It's also flattering. In a mass-market culture, belonging to a distinct subgroup, even if it numbers many millions, contributes to a sense of identity. In a 1969 Gallup poll, 74 percent of Americans believed in the generation gap. A poll last year found that 79 percent now do. Between then and now, of course, generations have shifted. Then, it was baby boomers...

The Up-or-Down Vote on Obama’s Presidency

WEDNESDAY’S health care rally was one of President Obama’s finest hours. It was so fine it couldn’t be blighted even by his preposterous backdrop, a cohort of white-jacketed medical workers large enough to staff a hospital in one of the daytime soaps that refused to be pre-empted by the White House show. Obama’s urgent script didn’t need such cheesy theatrics. At last he took ownership of what he called “my proposal,” stating concisely three concrete ways the bill would improve America’s broken health care system. At last he pushed for a majority-rule, up-or-down vote in Congress. At last he conceded...

WEDNESDAY'S health care rally was one of President Obama's finest hours. It was so fine it couldn't be blighted even by his preposterous backdrop, a cohort of white-jacketed medical workers large enough to staff a hospital in one of the daytime soaps that refused to be pre-empted by the White House show. At last he mobilized his rhetoric against a villain everyone could hiss - insurance companies. In a brief address, he mentioned these malefactors of great greed 13 times.

A brew of oddities from the news columns.... Everyone in the jobless cohort is hurting bigtime, but there's a large and growing jobless gender gap. This economic downturn is falling especially hard on men. In the Great Recession, about 7.5 million Americans have lost their jobs -- about 5.4 million of them men. And today, for the first time, women hold a majority of payroll jobs. ***** When Egypt's Mohamed ElBaradei departed late last year as head of the UN's nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency, he pronounced his and his agency's efforts to curb nuclear proliferation "in tatters" --...

A recently released New Jersey prisoner was yanked off an Amtrak train in Colorado after fellow passengers heard him mention Al Qaeda and make threatening comments, authorities said. Ojore Nuru Lutalo, 64, was free on $30,000 bond Friday after his arrest earlier this week at a Colorado train station. The Elizabeth, N.J., man was traveling to Chicago after reportedly attending the Los Angeles Anarchist Book Fair last weekend. Passengers riding with him Tuesday heard Lutalo speaking on his cell phone, declaring he hadn't killed anyone yet and demanding cooperation from a purported cohort. "We have to work in small groups,"...

Family fun—and guns(NV)

Will they let us in without a gun? that’s my biggest concern as we drive to the new Clark County Shooting Park at the northern end of Decatur. I ask my cohort whether we can borrow her brother’s pistol; but shortly the talk turns to how her mother got shot in the foot once in a family gun-handling accident—“blood spurted straight up!” I decide we’ll go gunless. Turns out yes, you’re welcome to go gunless. You can take a picnic. You can take a properly leashed dog. It’s a public park for the stouter-in-faith than I. There are RVs and...
